What I Learned From Pitching At SXSW’s Dolphin Tank

Posted on Mar 27, 2012

This post can be found here and was written by Misty Gibbs. The most important lesson was embracing failures as learning experiences.By Misty Gibbs (Founder & CEO, Empower Lounge)I had the great opportunity to pitch Empower Lounge at SXSW for Startup America Women‘s The Dolphin Tank. What did I learn with only two minutes to pitch the panel of judges who happen to be ALL women, a rare opportunity for a female founder? Less is more. More is better.Less is more about the “why” behind your product. I spent most of the two minutes sharing research and what I learned first-hand about what smart women really crave from the digital world to build the case for the pain Empower Lounge is solving. Yes, this is story is important...

Hacking Your Introversion

Posted on Mar 26, 2012

This post originally appeared here and was written by Alex SchiffLast month, I took a Myers-Briggs personality test for my management and organizations class. I received an ENFJ score — extroverted, intuitive, feeling and judging. But in every category besides extroversion, it was a “weak” result in that if I answered a few questions differently it could have gone the other way. The only thing that Myers-Briggs could definitively tell me was that I’m an extrovert. If you met me 5 years ago, this would have been a laughable characterization. I may have had extroverted tendencies growing up, but it was always cased in a thick and unbreakable introverted shell. I would think about going up to people for one reason or...

The Gig Tank

Posted on Mar 26, 2012

By Sheldon Grizzle, Air Traffic Controller of The Company Lab, a Partner of Startup TennesseeIt's great to see people who are really passionate about what they do (or in most cases I see, what they WANT to do). I get to see it every day at the CO.LAB, as I work to help entrepreneurs get their ideas off the ground. I am blessed to work alongside people who are passionate about their venture, passionate about their team, passionate about innovation, and passionate about their community (mine is Chattanooga). My recent experiences at SXSW reminded me that Chattanoogans are not alone in their passion for these things.I think a lot of credit for the current groundswell of entrepreneurial excitement is due to the efforts of Scott Case, CEO...

Every company needs a mascot.

Posted on Mar 23, 2012

Today is National Puppy Day, and we wanted to “paws” and reflect on the impact dogs have on the startup culture. Today’s blog has been provided by Scrappy and Shaggy (@scrappyshaggy) who are Startup America team members and entrepreneurs in their own right. We are often amused at how frequently we’re the subject matter of startups like our members: DoodyCalls, Nap Dog Media, The dog dorks, CAMP 4 PAWS, Doggie Day Camp and Boarding, CharlieDog and Friends LLC, Blue Dog Mead, Blog Mutt, and so many more. Don’t get us wrong, we love our direct-to-the-door treat delivery service as much as the next dog. But, beyond that, our role in the startup ecosystem is far...

Why Crowdfunding is Important

Posted on Mar 23, 2012

This post originally apperaed here and was written by Carl Pierre. With the passing of the JOBS Act through the senate, you have probably heard the term “crowdfunding” thrown around quite a bit in the past few days. For those unfamiliar with the term, PleaseFund.us describes it as: “the collective cooperation, attention, and trust by people who network and pool their money and other resources together, usually via the internet to support efforts initiated by other people or organizations.”In the past, crowdfunding has been a topic of heated debate and controversy due to it’s laissez-faire approach to regulating investments into companies. With past financial meltdowns like the Dot Com bubble and the 2009...

10 Ways For Female Entrepreneurs To Get Funded

Posted on Mar 23, 2012

By Jean Brittingham We need more companies run by women, but they’re often shut out of the investment game. Here are some ways to break through the VC glass ceiling. There are many myths about what makes any given community great for entrepreneurship. The Kauffman Foundation, which has done some of the best research on what makes entrepreneurs tick (and what helps them be successful) admits that the “magic sauce” data about startup success (or failure) is just not there. At the same time, there is a growing consensus that new companies are critical to creating a strong economy. From my perspective, new companies started by women will be one of the keys to a truly sustainable new economy. But first we have to overcome...
