Startup America NYSE Euronext Panel on the Environment for Startups
This blog originally appeared here.By Brian Waltermire, Co-Founder, Circcle, @BrianWaltermireGreat event this week at the NYSE. It was a half day event at NYSE, which is now closed to tourists, so was pretty cool to see it from the inside. I was previously here in 1999 at the height of the tech boom. There is still a small museum upstairs that highlights events since the inception of the NYSE.Startup America, Euronext and Travelers did a great job putting together a solid team to represent public, private, and government's involvement in helping to restart America's economy through small businesses. The head of the SBA attended as well as the CEO of NYSE Euronext, and the CEO of Travelers. It was good to hear that government...

How to Communicate the Value of Your Startup to Attract Investors
By Roland Jackman, Principal, Sizzable, @sizzableStartup-entrepreneurs often believe that it’s their cool-new-idea that’ll grab the attention and wallets of potential Angel Investors and VCs.Or they’ll calculate the size of their target market and run analyses of how much revenue their startup can generate by simply capturing X-percentage of that market. But that's not what investors want to hear.Cool new ideas really aren’t all that uncommon. And math . . . ? Professional investors are pretty good at running the numbers themselves. What investors want to hear . . . what they need to hear in order to crack open their checkbooks, is something far more basic---and yet, so rare.7 Experts Share how to Communicate the...

Just Do It
This blog originally appeared here.By AnnMarie McIlwain, Founder and CEO, CareerFuel, @mcilwainaWomen account for only 3% of all high-growth startups, according to the Center for Women’s Business Research, yet we obtain half of all degrees. Women also access just 5% of capital, yet operate 30% of all small businesses. Why is this and what can we do about it? These were the central questions raised at an event I recently attended in New York City thanks to StartUp America— the We Own It Summit. The answers (as you might expect) were complex, but a common theme regarding confidence emerged. Several participants suggested that women lack the confidence to “think big” and, where necessary, to “go for the...

"Startup Communities" by Brad Feld
This blog originally appeared here.A "publisher's draft" of Brad's latest book (release date in coming weeks) called "Startup Communities" appeared on my desk the other day. I just finished reading it.What an awesome book! Brad put to words what I've been grasping to codify in my mind for a decade or so now. Specifically, what makes Boulder (and as the name implies, other communities outside Boulder) what it is from a startup/tech standpoint!?! Part of the challenge was time; time needed to pass in order to come up with much of the framework (scenarios needed to play out, relationships needed to evolve, etc). The bigger challenge, however, in putting structure around something unwieldy is being able to see...

What Entrepreneurs Can Learn from Olympians
By Adrea P., Startup America Communications Intern, @startupamericaEveryone loves Olympians. Paying it Forward: America's Corporations & Next Generation Startups
This blog originally appeared on Huffington Post's Business Page. By Derek Holt, Managing Director, National Partnerships, The Startup America Partnership, @derekfholtAmerica's iconic brands all share a basic, often overlooked, attribute: they all began as a startup. GE, Ford, Dell, and every other company that is now a household name started as an idea, a business case, a great founder's vision. These visionaries not only created amazing companies and thousands of jobs, but helped improve life for people all over the world. They didn't stop there. They, like founders before them, made paying it forward to the next generation of startups a primary focus.Startup history is undoubtedly marked by the unspoken...
