Transform your business today and learn how Kapta can help you from its founder Alex Raymond.
What inspired you to start your company?
I have been in the HR technology industry for 12 years. In general, all these software tools are too complex and don't deliver enough real value to the business. So we decided to change that with Kapta.
Tell us about your product or service
Kapta is for high-growth companies that want to bring alignment, transparency and accountability to their workforce. With Kapta, you can set and manage your goals, link them to corporate objectives, and track the entire goal execution process. It takes less than 5 minutes a week to get maximum value from Kapta. We operate in a very hot industry. SaaS in the HR space has experienced about $5billion of M&A activity in the last year. So things are moving really fast, which creates lots of interesting opportunities for us.
Tell us something unique about you and your co-founders
We're a completely remote team. All the founders have known each other and worked together since 2000, but none of us live in the same city! We're in Boulder, Colorado; Baltimore, Maryland; Bratislava, Slovakia; and Cape Town, South Africa.
What problem does your product or service solve?
Many high-growth companies reach a point where they need to focus their efforts around particular goals and objectives. Once the company has reached an early scaling stage, CEOs need to make sure that everyone is "on the same page" and executing on the company's growth plans.
Tools like Salesforce.com are used to track sales. There are also lots of tools to manage work in the development team. Till now, CEOs have had very little visibility into how the rest of the company is doing on their goals. Information isn't available in real-time and there's lots of noise in the data.
Kapta solves this problem by giving CEOs a dashboard of how employee goals link up to the company's objectives, and real-time visibility into how everyone is tracking against their goals. It just takes a few minutes to update your goals and the information is visible to anyone in the company.
What are your startup's three biggest challenges to growth?
We've faced a number of the common start-up challenges.
First we had to define our market and make sure that our proposed solution solved a real problem. We pivoted a couple of times until we were comfortable with our chosen path.
Getting the word out has been a marketing challenge. We have a great website, solid blog, and a decent amount of social media activity but it's always important to keep building visibility and the sales funnel.
We're a pretty sales-focused company, but getting a significant number of paying customers is a challenge. We are now starting to get real traction which is a great feeling.
How has the Startup America Partnership helped you overcome these challenges to growth?
We've been members of the Startup America Partnership since the company was founded. We love the community of entrepreneurs and the way the Startup America Partnership is dedicated to helping young companies like ours. It's great to have such a significant supporter - especially one that's all over the country.
What Startup America Member Benefits have you used?
We have actively used many of the benefits offered by the Startup America Partnership. I've participated in a number of educational webinars and we also used some of the member deals offered on the website (Google Adwords was one of them).
In addition, we had two phenomenal experiences with the Startup America Partnership. The first is that we were invited to present at the iTalent Competition, which was an HR technology event sponsored by the Startup America Partnership in Washington, DC. That gave us amazing visibility with a large customer base.
Secondly, the Startup America Partnership hosted a major gathering in Boulder, Colorado a couple of months ago. Through that, I was able to meet entrepreneurs from around the country and learn how the Startup America Partnership is helping them, too.
Why should startups join Startup America?
Entrepreneurship can be tough and lonely at times, so it's really valuable to have resources at your disposal. The Startup America Partnership is an active, valuable community of entrepreneurs, advisers and investors.
The Startup America Partnership is really a way to smooth out the entrepreneurial journey.
What is the startup culture like in your City/State?
Boulder, Colorado is famous for its dynamic entrepreneurial culture. There are tons of people here doing interesting projects and willing to help others out. I think it's among the top 5 cities in the country for the creation of new businesses.
